Are you ready for the Great American Smokeout (GASO)? Every year on the third Thursday of November, the American Cancer Society calls on all smokers to quit smoking, at least for one day. And if you’re serious about quitting, it can help to have support from a friend who’s also trying to quit. So get a jump on the Great American Smokeout, find a buddy, and quit this Monday!
Joining the Great American Smokeout can be a great dress rehearsal where you and your buddy act out a brand new, smoke-free scene. Between today and Thursday, you can get a sense of how great it will feel to quit smoking. And if you can get to this Thursday smoke-free, you can look to next Monday as your next target to re-commit to your quit. All it takes it your own built-in willpower and a good cheering section.
Whether you start on Monday or on GASO, it’s always a good idea to write down your quit plan. Make a list of healthy snacks and free distractions and activities that will help you overcome cravings. Ask your buddy to be available to get your mind off of cigarettes and come up with a plan to get in touch with them at a moment’s notice. If your buddy happens to be unavailable, you still have support – you can call 1-800-QUIT-NOW or you can find #GASO and #quitmonday on social media.
There is no magic bullet for quitting smoking – you have to want to quit. But that’s the first step every former-smoker took when they decided to quit. This Monday, get a head start on GASO by getting your quit plan and your quit team in place, then keep going next Monday, too!
